Researchers like Stephen Krashen, Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California, suggests that for most young readers the best way to become a stronger reader is simply to read more. After synthesizing fifty-one studies, he reports, that young people need ongoing, regular experiences of free voluntary reading. It is unsurprising that students learn to read by reading. He recommends sustained silent reading, as little as 10 minutes a day.
In light of this research, within the library we have been running educational programmes that encourage regular free reading, including the Take 10reading challenge which culminated in a celebration of reading. Students across Senior and Junior Schools earnt their invitation by committing to reading every day during Term 3. They attended a lively lunchtime event with quizzes, spot prizes and our delicious Take 10cake.
