Luka Lesson – Slam Poet
Slam poetry, typically short, sharp and powerful, is a form of competitive performance poetry. Works of poetry, no longer than two minutes, are performed in public spaces and judged by randomly selected audience members. On Thursday 12 August, we were very fortunate to have Luka Lesson the 2011 Australian Poetry Slam champion and the 2010 Melbourne Overload Poetry Festival Slam champion visit Ruyton. Luka is a professional poet whose work is a unique blend of hip-hop verse and more traditional poetry styles. His poetry speaks of life in contemporary Australia, touching on themes of lost love, culture, heritage and social justice. He performed his poetry to an enthralled group of Year 8 students. The girls were not only completely immersed in the narrative of his poems but their insightful questions indicated that they wanted to explore his artistic and writing processes. The session provided to be a powerful and engaging literary learning experience.
