Would the outcome have been any different if there were girls on the island in “Lord of the Flies”? This was the question that the Lit Club students asked themselves over pizza, soft drink and dessert. On the afternoon of Wednesday 19 March, they gathered to watch the original 1963 movie adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel. Conversations were animated and enthusiastic but ultimately with the help of our new Lit Club conch they reached consensus. Their verdict was that the violence portrayed couldn’t be avoided even with the influence of females. This movie was a challenging starting point for some lively discussions on human nature and man’s capacity to default to violence. There was however the view expressed that if the girls were Lit Club students, they’d probably find a coconut tree to read beneath or maybe even write their own book in the sand.
